Every once in a while hubby and I will get motivated and buy a few cases of something. So I'm not exactly starting from scratch. I don't know what is going on in your part of the world but when Costco and Sam's club start rationing their rice, I sat up and took notice. Not panicking, just preparing. Every morning on my way to seminary I drive by 2 gas stations. It seems just about every 2-3 days the prices go up. At the local Shell, it is now 3.93! I don't know about you but that concerns me. I have to admit that it does influence my driving habits and I don't normally do a lot of running around. Usually you think of using your food storage because of a natural disaster or loss of employment not because you can't afford to drive anywhere! (or at least as often) So friends and I are getting serious about doing what we can. It can be a little bit overwhelming. Just a little. I was given this great site if you want to know what you'll need for your year supply. I need 975 lbs of wheat. That translates into 12 superpails (6 gallon containers) or 97 #10 cans! Where do you put that? That's only wheat. Last fall hubby rebuilt my pantry. see pic. I have a lot more storage space now. But not enough for 975 lbs of wheat. We also got those first in first out can rotators. Really love them. I bought my first ever 5 gallon container and put these clever gamma lids on them, they twist, no prying required. I went to our local church cannery and purchased some things. I still have to put them in the cans. I'm doing that next week. Even the cannery is out of stock on the basics. I usually shop with the idea I only buy what I need, to save money. Now I'm just going to buy it regardless until I have what I need to sustain our family for a year. Four jars of peanut butter down, only 9 to go! I have to admit I do love walking into my pantry and feeling like I'm walking down an aisle at the grocery store! I'll let you know how I'm doing.
Feel free to share your food storage opinions. When I get this done I can move on to my next item on my to do list. To develop an alternative fuel source!
